7th Grade Geography

In a delightful twist to their geography curriculum, 7th-grade students at our school are preparing to exchange snacks with peers from two schools in Asia. This unique initiative is fostering cultural appreciation and global connections through something everyone loves: food!

Students in the 6th-period geography class are partnering with Po Leung Kuk Lo Kit Sing Secondary School in Hong Kong, China. Meanwhile, 7th and 8th-period students will be sharing their snacks with classmates from Polar Bear English Language Academy in Daegu, South Korea. These exchanges promise not only to satisfy taste buds but also to bridge cultural divides.

A Bite into Culture

Food is a universal language, and snacks often represent unique aspects of a culture's identity. By swapping their favorite treats, students get a tangible and tasty insight into the lives of their peers overseas. Imagine savoring sweet and chewy pineapple buns from Hong Kong or the spicy crunch of South Korean tteokbokki-flavored chips while introducing others to classics like peanut butter crackers or chocolate chip cookies.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

This project extends learning beyond textbooks and maps. By engaging directly with students from other countries, our geography classes are experiencing the essence of cultural exchange. They'll explore the history and significance behind popular snacks, enhancing their understanding of global traditions. For instance, Hong Kong’s egg rolls reflect the region's culinary heritage, while South Korea’s honey butter almonds have become an iconic modern treat.

Benefits of Snack Swapping

  1. Cultural Awareness: Sampling snacks from another country is an accessible and enjoyable way to learn about different traditions, flavors, and values.

  2. Communication Skills: Preparing personal notes or videos to accompany their snacks helps students practice cross-cultural communication.

  3. Community Building: These exchanges encourage students to find commonalities, fostering a sense of global unity.

  4. Curiosity and Exploration: Students become more open to trying new things, both in food and in life.

The project highlights how small gestures—like sharing a snack—can have a big impact on cultural understanding. As these students await their packages from Hong Kong and South Korea, one thing is clear: geography has never been this delicious!
