Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Program

 

Welcome to our schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. This program is designed to teach, recognize and praise the behaviors we want from our students through positive reinforcement.

Components of our PBIS Program

What are our behavior expectations?

 

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible   

 

  Our PBIS mascot is Millie, the Milllville Owl. She helps students to understand our expectations.

How do we teach our behavior expectations?

  • At the beginning of the year and again in January, students are taught the expected behaviors though a series of lessons.
  • Teachers help students to learn what the expectations look and sound like in every setting of the school environment.
  • These lessons are retaught and reinforced throughout the school year as needed.
  • Posters are displayed throughout the school detailing the specific behaviors expected in each area.

How are positive behaviors recognized?

  • All students are given a Quaker Card. Each Quaker Card has 10 spaces for a student to receive recognition from any staff member. If a student does not have their Quaker Card with them, a Q-Card is given which can be exchanged for a mark on the student’s Quaker Card. When a student’s card is filled, they place it in a jar in their classroom and receive a new Quaker card.
  • On Fridays, two student cards are drawn from each classroom jar. Those students whose names were pulled are placed on our Quaker Board. When one row of names is filled on our Quaker Board, students in that row receive an extra incentive.

How do we handle discipline when behavior expectations are not met?

Even with clear expectations, sometimes children do not meet the desired behaviors. Behaviors are divided into two categories.

  • Classroom Managed Behaviors are behaviors that are disruptive to the learning environment and are handled by the teachers. Should these behaviors become a pattern that do not meet school expectations, it becomes an office discipline referral.
  • Office Discipline Referrals are issues that are sent to the office. Parents/ Guardians are notified of these referrals. When a student repeatedly receives office discipline referrals, a team will meet to develop an effective behavior intervention plan for that child.
